Gluten free foods for people with celiac disease, food allergies, and autism (GFCF diet) are our specialty at Gluten-Free Trading Company.
The inspiration for Gluten-Free Trading Company came in 1999 when the founders, Linda and John, were travelling in France. John had been on a gluten-free diet since 1987. While shopping at a health food store in Paris, Linda and John discovered many excellent European gluten-free food products that were not available to celiacs in the United States. They began locating sources for many of these products, and in March 2000 they opened America's first exclusively gluten-free grocery store in Milwaukee. This was followed by a mail order service and web store shipping to celiacs nationwide.
At Gluten-Free Trading Company we are strongly committed to the idea that although the gluten free diet can sometimes be a nuisance, it should not be a burden. Perhaps that is one of the reasons the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Program presented us with the Champion Award in 2003. We are always enthusiastic to discover tasty new gluten-free recipes--especially recipes that come from the many countries around the world where wheat, barley and rye have never traditionally been part of the cuisine. We encourage our customers to take advantage of the resources available from the national celiac support groups such as the Celiac Sprue Association (CSA-USA), Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), the Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF) and the many fine local celiac support groups.
In 2005 we moved our retail store to a new location in Milwaukee's historic Bay View neighborhood. From there the entire staff work long hours to obtain, stock, and ship the most comprehensive selection of gluten free foods from around the world. In 2009 we added a blog to share recipes, information about new products, and notices about the gluten free events. You can also keep up to date by signing up for our newsletter.
We hope that our gluten free products can help you live well on your gluten free diet. Above all, we encourage you to be adventuresome. Gluten free cooking is about more than just adapting old favorites. Make the most of it by experimenting with new ingredients and trying new cuisines! As the French epicure Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said, "The discovery of a new dish does more for human happiness than the discovery of a new star."
